Jaguar is moving closer to the launch of its new electric era, and the company has chosen one of the world’s most famous automotive locations to showcase its next big step.
The Jaguar Type 01, a new four-door electric grand tourer, has made a public appearance around the streets of Monaco ahead of its official global reveal later this year. The prototype was driven around the iconic Monaco circuit wearing a distinctive camouflage design as Jaguar prepared for the Formula E weekend.
The Monaco appearance gives enthusiasts their clearest look yet at the car that will effectively restart Jaguar’s production-car story after the brand’s major transformation toward an all-electric luxury lineup.
More Than 1,000 PS From Three Electric Motors
The Type 01 is not being positioned as an ordinary luxury EV.
Jaguar says the four-door GT will use a tri-motor electric powertrain producing more than 1,000 PS and over 1,300 Nm of torque. That puts the Type 01 among the most powerful Jaguar road cars ever developed.
The company has also been drawing heavily on its Formula E experience while developing the car. Jaguar says engineers have applied technology and lessons from its championship-winning Jaguar TCS Racing programme to areas including all-wheel-drive control, regenerative braking, fast-charging capability and silicon-carbide-powered inverters.
That connection with motorsport is important because Jaguar wants the Type 01 to deliver more than just straight-line performance. The company is promising a car with quick responses and a low centre of gravity while maintaining the comfort expected from a luxury grand tourer.
From Type 00 Concept to Type 01
The Type 01 is closely related to the dramatic Jaguar Type 00 concept that introduced the company’s new design direction in 2024.
While the Type 00 was presented as a design statement, the Type 01 takes that philosophy toward a production vehicle. Jaguar has described the new car as the first model of a completely new generation for the brand.
The name itself carries that message.
According to Jaguar’s official explanation of the Type 01 name, “Type” connects the vehicle with Jaguar’s historic naming tradition, while the “0” represents electric propulsion and zero tailpipe emissions. The “1” represents the first Jaguar of its new era.
It is a significant departure from the company’s previous approach, but Jaguar is clearly trying to maintain a connection with its performance heritage.
Monaco Was More Than a Photo Opportunity
The choice of Monaco was particularly fitting.
The Type 01 prototypes were driven around the famous street circuit ahead of the Monaco E-Prix, where Jaguar’s Formula E team was competing. Jaguar has a long association with motorsport in the principality, making it an appropriate location to introduce the car’s new identity to the public.
The prototypes were covered in a colourful camouflage wrap designed around Jaguar’s new visual language. Despite the camouflage, the car’s long bonnet, low stance and dramatic proportions were clearly visible.
Jaguar describes the design as part of its new “Exuberant Modernism” philosophy, which is intended to make its future vehicles more distinctive and less conventional.

Jaguar Is Betting Big on Electric Luxury
The Type 01 arrives at an important moment for Jaguar.
The company has been undergoing a major transformation, moving away from its previous model lineup and repositioning itself as a more exclusive luxury brand. Jaguar has said that its future range will be entirely electric, while sister brands such as Range Rover, Discovery and Defender are also expanding into electric vehicles.
The transition has not been completely straightforward. Jaguar’s new electric models were delayed as the company carried out additional development work and reassessed market conditions.
That makes the Type 01 particularly important. It isn’t simply another new EV; it is intended to establish what Jaguar’s next generation of vehicles will look and feel like.
The Interior Takes a Different Approach
Jaguar has also begun revealing details of the Type 01’s cabin.
The four-seat interior features a distinctive central spine running through the cabin, creating four individual seating areas. The design is intended to combine a low, sporty driving position with the comfort expected from a high-end GT.
Jaguar says the dashboard incorporates technology more discreetly rather than filling the cabin with large screens. The company has also highlighted premium materials, concealed storage and a design influenced by its new “Exuberant Modernism” philosophy.
The interior is another indication that Jaguar is trying to differentiate the Type 01 from mainstream electric cars.
Official Reveal Coming in October
Although the Type 01 has already appeared publicly in Monaco and has subsequently been shown in other locations, Jaguar has not yet revealed the complete production car.
The company has confirmed that the full Type 01 reveal is scheduled for New York on October 6, 2026. Jaguar has also indicated that the car is expected to enter global markets in the first half of 2027.
More specifications, pricing, final performance figures and production details are therefore still expected to be announced.

The Jaguar Type 01 could be one of the most important electric cars in Jaguar’s modern history.
With more than 1,000 PS, three electric motors and technology influenced by Formula E, it clearly has the performance credentials. But the bigger story is the role the Type 01 plays in Jaguar’s reinvention.
The company is taking a significant gamble by moving further into the luxury-electric market at a time when premium EV demand remains challenging in some markets. The Type 01 will therefore need to offer more than impressive numbers. Its design, range, charging performance, driving experience and pricing will all determine whether Jaguar’s new strategy succeeds.
For now, though, the Type 01 looks like a serious statement of intent.
Jaguar has effectively gone back to the drawing board — and this time, its future is electric.
